The student newspaper – launched in the 1920’s when St. Joseph’s Seminary moved to the Burton Street campus – is a great source of information about life there over the years. The name and format changed several times, and it was not published at all between 1933 and 1938 at the height of the Great Depression.
The issues are arranged in chronological order by academic year, beginning with 1954-55 and concluding with 1968-69.
To view an issue, click on the copy of its front page below. This will launch the opening of a PDF version of that issue’s pages. You will need to have the Acrobat Reader program loaded on your computer, tablet or smart phone.
An effort is under way to scan the Recorder into a digital format so it can be used by alumni and others to explore the people and events that shaped the lives of so many young men. The second phase is to check the diocesan archives to fill in the gaps. If you have copies that you would like to share with other alumni, please drop a note to stjoememories@gmail.com and we’ll figure out how to scan them and fill in the gaps.
Special thanks to Jim Blanchard, Diocesan Archivist Angela Yondo, and Chuck Howley for helping to make these memorabilia available to St. Joe alumni.
Lots of familiar names, faces, and events − and some you may have forgotten!
1954 – 1955 (Volume 28)
NOTE: This issue is somewhat difficult to read because the original is very pale. It was issued at the opening of the 1954-55 academic year. Among the highlights is the appointment of Fr. Joseph McKinney (later Bishop McKinney), along with a biographical sketch. The assistant editor was Gasper Ancona (now Msgr. Ancona). Page 2 notes that “some 50” enrolled in the freshman class. Of these, 14 completed 6 years of study, and graduated in the Class of 1960.
